I saw the following video linked to over at WoS, and well. I can see how for some it would be effective, and if it triggers the desired response from you, then more power to you. I'm glad. But, erm, I watched it without noticing what it was intended for, until afterwards, and I had a different perception of events.
Insane controlling father forces loyal wife and daughter who is dressed up in sinister fashion as some kind of fairy, with no trousers or skirt on, to sit in front of him and smile. They sit and grin fearfully at him, shifting uncomfortably under the weight of his wicked stare, whilst he sits and pretends he's driving his car. Of course, since the ban he isn't allowed to drive anymore. Or drink.
Man turns and looks insanely at nothing, before turning around to look at his family. His daughter and he make eye-contact. Suddenly really seeing her for the first time, he goes into epic shock as the guilt of his abusive behaviour finally washed over him. She also responds with shock, and visible fear, in case he is about to go to 'the bad place' again. Is the belt coming off?
He shrinks into himself, suddenly overcome with shock, grief. That's his daughter, he realizes. She runs over to him, still half-naked, to wrap her arms around him and plead no, not tonight, please. His wife runs over and gently grabs him around the shoulder, trying to stop him without angering him.
Together they hold onto him, fearful of another one of his outbursts. But it's... alright. He's had a moment of clarity. As he comes down from his shock, he accidentally kicks a plastic tub full of all the leftover sequins and sparkly bits from when his wife made the fairy costume for their daughter.
They all smile, in relief, a family for perhaps the first time. Maybe it's all gonna be okay now. Maybe the little girl can finally have the other half of her fairy costume. But that's okay. It can be cleaned up. The man sits back in relief, feeling the loving arms of his wife and daughter around him, and for the first time in years, doesn't want a drink.
It's powerful stuff, sure. But I honestly thought it was an anti-abuse ad, until afterwards (here, of course, you can see the title before you even press play). I'm not saying 'Ha-ha, abuse is funny'. I'm saying that I don't understand the advert. Always drive with your family sitting on the bonnet so they can climb in and fasten your seat belt if you forget? Never drive straight at your family? Wear shoes when driving?
